Sniffest 2026 Edition

May 18, 2026, ISOEN 2026 conference

We are pleased to announce the 5th edition of the Sniffest. Since its creation, Sniffest aims to attract new talent to the sensor community, create advance perspectives in the field by promoting practical and original solutions using sensors-associated valuable skills.

In the 5th edition, which will take place during the ISOEN conference, to be held in Chongqing, China, from May 17–20, the students will have the opportunity to show their capacities, bringing their own developed equipment to the test in ISOEN 2026.

The 5th edition of Sniffest will focus on the recognition of Chinese Medicinal Herbs (CMHs) which features one of the Chinese traditional civilization.

Chinese Medicinal Herbs (CMHs) are an essential part of Chinese traditional civilization! For thousands of years, they have been used to balance the body, prevent illness, and promote longevity. CMHs include a wide variety of natural ingredients such as ginseng, goji berries, licorice root, and angelica, each with unique healing properties. These herbs are often brewed into teas, simmered in soups, or blended into tonics that support health and wellness.  Chinese Medicinal Herbs connect generations through wisdom and culture. Definitely worth exploring when experiencing Chinese tradition!

The competition will take place in the afternoon of Day 2 and will consist of two rounds: a qualification round and a final round.

In the qualification round, teams will be asked to identify 3 single Chinese Medicinal Herbs (CMHs) from a provided list using their electronic nose devices. Only the device outputs may be used for identification, and no manual judgment is allowed. Teams that correctly identify all 3 herbs within the time limit will advance to the final round.

In the final round, teams will face a more challenging task: identifying binary mixtures of two CMHs from a smaller announced list. The evaluation will be based on accuracy, and in the case of a tie, the shorter detection time will determine the winner.

The competition will award one first prize, two second prizes, several participation prizes, and one best innovation award.
